How to Fix svchost.exe high 99% CPU usage

Problem:
In Windows XP, svchost.exe uses very high percentage of CPU and makes the computer unresponsive.
There seems to be a bug that causes some sort of a memory leak.

Solution 1:

  1. Start Windows update: Start > All programs > Windows Update
  2. Click on “Change Settings” in the left grey column.
  3. Disable Microsoft Update option and ignore the warnings.
  4. Now you can visit the “Windows update” page instead of the “Microsoft Update”

Solution 2:
Visit the Microsoft support page and follow the instructions. Download the two files in steps 1 and 2 and install.

Solution 3:
Visit here and try the Reset. you can also do Repair or Remove and Reinstall.
It’s a very informative site. Read through the page to deal with other Auto update issues.
