Which eMule Sites are Scams?

In the registry cleaner scam article, I said that I would cover P2P program scams. I thought it would be a good idea to be as specific as possible. So, I’ve decided to cover one program at a time, and also give you advise on how to set up the program correctly.

Well, the first P2P filesharing program to be covered is eMule. eMule has been around for a while now.It was started on May 13, 2002 by Hendrik Breitkreuz (also known as Merkur) who was dissatisfied with the original eDonkey2000 client. Over time more developers joined the effort. It is an opensource software meaning anyone can have the access to the source code. Here’s what it looks like:

eMule 0.49c

You can search for anything from video/audio files to programs. Once you set it up properly, it’s a very good filesharing program.

These are examples of scam sites: www.emule.com, www.tntdownloads.com, www.emule–it.com, vvww-emule.com

Check out the newly compiled SCAM LIST for more.

So, don’t go to one of these sites to download eMule after reading this :).

Some ask for money trying to sell this free software, and that should tell you that it’s an obvious scam. However, some of them don’t ask for money, and they use other methods to scam you. One method is to ask for your personal information (ie. name, email etc). The other is to include a harmful software with the download.

The official website for eMule is http://www.emule-project.net. Make sure you get your copy form the official source or one of the trusted download sites (ex. FileHippo).

Now that we know how to avoid scams, let’s go through how to maximize eMule experience and also make it safer.

Recommendations

After you have downloaded and installed the official release, open eMule and follow these steps.

  1. Go to Options -> Security
    Security
  2. Check the box next to ‘Filter servers too’
  3. In ‘Update from URL’ box, type:
    http://emulepawcio.sourceforge.net/ipfilter.zip
  4. Click on ‘Load’
  5. Go to  Options -> Server
    Server
  6. Set ‘Remove dead servers after’ to 9 tries
  7. Click ‘List’ button that appears next to ‘Auto update server list at startup’
  8. Notepad will open. Write this line and remove all others if any:
    http://www.peerates.net/servers.php
  9. Save changes in notepad
  10. Untick the options to update list of servers when connecting to new server and new client
  11. Click OK to save and exit options window
  12. Go to Servers window
  13. Remove all servers from static list
  14. Remove all servers from list
  15. In ‘Update Server.met from URL’ field, type the same URL you typed in step 8:
    http://www.peerates.net/servers.php
  16. Click Update button
  17. Double click on any server. Now you’re connected.

Also make sure to set your share folders in ‘Options -> Directories’ and open TCP and UDP ports set in ‘Options -> Connection’ from your router.

*Slightly modified from torpon’s guide.
