Facebook Used to Scam Grandparents

Grandparents be warned! If you get a phone call from one of your grandchildren asking for money, make sure it’s them.

Wisconsin consumer advocates are warning of a telephone scam that targets grandparents by preying on their love for their grandchildren.

Janet Jenkins of the state Division of Consumer Protection says the scammers are using Internet sites such as Facebook to get names and make the calls seem personal.

She says the typical call goes something like this: “Grandpa, this is your grandson. I’ve had an accident with a rental car in Canada. Please wire $2,500; I’ll pay you back. Please don’t tell mom or dad.”

Jenkins says one Wisconsin grandparent twice wired money and was swindled out of $19,000.

Jenkins advises grandparents to always be suspicious of anyone asking to have money wired to them and they should ask the caller questions that only a real grandchild could answer. – SOURCE

I understand how it could be hard for some grandparents to distinguish their own grandchild’s voice from a swindler. I’m putting some blame on you, the grandchildren, for not spending enough time with your grandparents so that they know you and your voice better. :( If you are a grandchild, please take some time to inform your grandparents of the online dangers. :P
