Fake µTorrent Website

uTorrent LogoµTorrent is the most popular Bit Torrent client at the moment. Consequently, there are those who use its name to exploit uninformed users.

Watch out for:

  • www.utorrent.pro – malicious website as detected by Avast! anti-virus.

Check out the newly compiled SCAM LIST for more.

µTorrent is free, so don’t pay for it.

Few tips (step-by-step) on setting up and using utorrent:

  1. Download uTorrent here and install.
  2. Open uTorrent, if not already open, and click on ‘Options’ -> ‘Preferences’
  3. Click on ‘Directories’, select ‘put new downloads in’, and select the folder to download files to.
  4. Click on ‘Connection’, and check ‘enable UPnP port mapping’. If your router does not support UPnP, then you need to choose a port and open in through your router setting. You can get help with that here
  5. Here are screen-shots for the rest of the settings. I have a crappy 6mbit/800kbit internet speed, so I adjusted my numbers accordingly, especially for the ‘Bandwidth’. The rest are up to personal preferences and needs, but you can follow what I did below if you don’t want to bother with all the settings. You can ignore the other settings not in the screen-shots.
  6. General

  7. UI

  8. Bandwidth

  9. BitTorrent

  10. Qeueing

After that’s all done, you can visit your favorite Torrent sites, and click on a .torrent link. Your browser will ask you to either save or open the .torrent file. Select ‘OPEN’ and uTorrent should start downloading the file.

Site Recommendations

  • www.speckly.com – A very good search engine that crawls through all the major torrent sites, and gives you the results sorted by the seed number.
  • www.mininova.org – One of the sites listed on Speckly, and the cleaner than most interface is nice with a large user base.
