Here’s a two part video of an Australian investigation (60 Minutes) into the world of Nigerian internet scammers.
Nigerian police raid into cyber cafes and arrest 419 suspects. Apparently, Nigerian policemen like to slap their suspects. What I found interesting was that the locals are on the scammers’ side. They throw rocks at the police and generally seem to have favorable opinions on scamming Westerners.
It is understandable. When you look at the way Western corporations (i.e. oil giants) exploit Nigeria’s soft laws on environmental protection, , one can understand the anger towards Westerners. Nigerian government should take on an equally large share of the blame, though.
Part 2 focuses on an old man who lost everything. 60 Minutes sets up a sting operation to catch some of the scammers. I got to say, there is no honour among scammers.

The old man still believed, at the end, that he had the right to some of that 30 million. Do victims become an addict that they will continue to send money even after they are told of the scam? It is not surprising as many gamblers admit that they will lose money if they gamble. That little ‘wish’ keeps them coming back.
