“You are Jealous of Me”

India, with its growing economy, has become a large target for Nigerian scams.

The core strategy of the scam is the same old advance fee fraud. But instead of lottery scams and inheritance scams, free goodies are used, as well, to entice potential victims to bite.

Imagine Finnish mobile handset giant Nokia paying you millions for being a loyal customer, or Korean consumer electronics giant LG offering you truckloads of cash with an LCD television.

Masquerading as your bank is also common in India. I am sure everyone’s inbox is full of these.

In one instance, a bank manager says he warned a customer against depositing Rs 15 lakh in an overseas account as “transaction fees” to claim his “reward”. But the customer’s reaction stumped him. “You are jealous of me,” the customer shot back.

Oh wow. Moving on…

The scammers also use SMS to send out mass spam. I can only imagine things will get worse in India. Education and awareness is the key to prevention. If people still fall for these scams after being warned; then they are meant to get scammed… destiny.

The more I cover stories like these, the more I think the main reasons why people fall for these scams are greed and stupidity. This is how Nigerian scammers themselves describe their American victims. Anyways, I don’t want to rant on this any longer.
